If I manually set my MacBook's "Limit Bandwith Settings" option in Steam from "Automatic" to at least 10MB or higher, the video bitrate quality issue resolves to look crisp & clear as it used to, but the stream loses stability to the point of completely freezing the video stream over Wifi.through testing, the only way I've been able to keep it stable is if I hardwire the Client MacBook as well. The issue looks to be a bandwidth setting or allocation problem specific to the MacOS version of Steam. I know it has nothing to do with my network or Host Computer, as I can still stream flawlessly to an IPhone 6s Plus with the Steam Link app installed over 5Ghz!įrom what I can tell, it has nothing to do with hardware/software encoding or decoding, as I've tried all combinations of that between both Host & Client with no fix. It used to work perfectly a year ago with this setup. I've been banging my head against the wall about this issue since the past couple of MacOS updates (after OSX required all applications to be 64-bit).basically since Steam updated to be 64-bit compatible, the streaming quality on my MacBook Pro has gone from damn near perfect, to a smeary low-bitrate-looking mess.įor my setup, I'm streaming from an okay Alienware gaming PC that is always directly wired to my Nighthawk router, to a mid-2012 MacBook Pro connected via 5Ghz Wifi. If anyone has had similar experience, I'd love to hear about it and if you've ever resolved the problem nothing else running in the background besides Steam heck, I can even stream to an iPad over WiFi and the results are pretty much the same as the Apple TV 4Ks, but with slightly increased latency because of the wireless (though I have several eero Pro units around the house, so the coverage is always excellent where you are)īut I'm just at a loss as to why the streaming to the MacBook Pro is just AWFUL. super crisp picture, crazy low latencies, zero packet loss, etc. If I stream to my two Apple TV 4K's (also on the same wired Gigabit network) they are ROCK SOLID. On the MacBook Pro, I've tried hardware decoding on and off and I've also tried all the different settings presets (Fast, Balanced, Beautiful) and they all pretty much yield the same results, which are:
